School board elections are currently "by seat," in which candidates must choose a particular seat—and a particular opponent—to run against. This fuels an atmosphere of pettiness and animosity that undermines Amityville's "friendly village" image.

 

On March 6, 2024, our group submitted a petition to change to an "at large" system, in which candidates run for all open seats. We believe this will shift focus away from "who is trying to unseat who" and onto the policy platforms of the candidates themselves.

 

The Board approved the proposition at the March 26 meetings. Now it's up to voters.
